‘Dark horse diplomat’: Melania Trump plays both sides in joint Russia-Ukraine White House visit

Beaming from a podium in the White House’s Grand Foyer, Melania Trump welcomed senior Russian and Ukrainian officials on Thursday to celebrate a ceasefire in an embattled Ukrainian town for which she has become the unlikeliest broker.

The evacuation from Oleshky, a frontline Ukrainian town now occupied by Russia where 800 people lived through a protracted humanitarian crisis, may seem like a sideshow at this point in the war. Russian missiles and drones continue to rain down on Kyiv and other major cities, and a single Russian strike described as a “double-tap” bombing killed 40 people in Zaporizhzhia on Wednesday.

So it could have been easy to brush the White House meeting off as a chance for Ukraine and Russia to flatter the first lady. And flatter her they did, praising her for her diplomatic acumen, delivering her state awards and even gifting her trinkets of thanks from the residents of Oleshky whom she saved. In case the subtext was not yet clear, a children’s drawing gifted by the Russian side was inscribed: “I love Melania.”

But there was real diplomatic juice in the room as Trump, a former model who has occupied a relatively quiet role in her husband’s second term as president, now played host to one of the highest-level gatherings of Russian and Ukrainian officials in recent months.

Kirill Dmitriev, the sanctioned head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund who regularly negotiates for Moscow, was seated next to Davyd Arakhamia, the head of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Servant of the People party and a chief negotiator for Ukraine. Next to them were Ukraine’s Dmytro Lubinets and Russia’s Yana Lantratova, the respective human rights ombudspeople who have become an unlikely and respectful double act throughout the evacuation process.

The meeting came after a particularly bitter public feud between Zelenskyy and Trump, as the US cut intelligence sharing and satellite internet in recent weeks in an apparent effort to pressure Kyiv into capitulating. And the Trump administration’s plans with Russia are in peril after the midterms, with triumphant Democrats promising to investigate senior aides to Trump who had pitched Russia on business deals to end the war in Ukraine.

But everyone at the White House on Thursday was focused on feting Melania, whose role in brokering the ceasefire was extensively praised at every opportunity – even if her descriptions of reviewing de-mining plans and assessing evacuation routes strained belief.

As well as the drawing, Dmitriev extended her a personal expression of gratitude from Vladimir Putin, while on the Ukrainian side, Lubinets presented her with the order of Princess Olga, first class – one of the country’s highest honours. He also issued a general request: “Please continue to do your wonderful work and support people.”

Stepping into the role of diplomat and humanitarian, the first lady called for “humanity over war” and said that she hoped the limited ceasefire in the frontline town would “inspire greater peace”.

“Together, we can create something more enduring than a temporary ceasefire,” she said. “Let us see Oleshky as a spark in a world of darkness, capable of illuminating the best in humanity. Build a powerful flame of peace, visible to the world. Ignite hope, foster cooperation and brighten a path toward lasting peace.”

Later, she handed personal letters to Dmitriev and Arakhamia to bring back to Putin and Zelenskyy.

It was an unusual role for Trump, who has not taken part in high-level negotiations between Ukraine and Russia before, and is said behind the scenes to have been critical of her husband’s heavy-handed approach to dealing with Ukraine.

But she has increasingly engaged in humanitarian efforts related to the conflict, first by working on a program that reunified more than 30 children displaced from their families during the conflict.

In Oleshky, she also claimed to have been involved in “every stage” of the planning. To do so, she said, she had “reviewed de-mining plans, aerial images, assessed roadways, and discussed evacuation routes, hospital access, vehicles and medical resources”.

Now the White House has cast her as a dark horse diplomat.

“This unprecedented gathering marks the first time in US history that an American first lady has personally brought representatives of two nations actively at war together at the White House to pursue diplomatic and humanitarian objectives,” said Marc Beckman, an aide who is self-described as her exclusive senior adviser.

What’s clear is that at this moment both sides have recognised the need to keep Melania – and the testy Trump administration – onside.
