Mike Johnson planning to meet with Elon Musk in Texas

Speaker Mike Johnson is planning to meet with GOP megadonor Elon Musk in Texas on Friday, according to four people familiar with the meeting.

The effort, first reported by POLITICO, comes as Johnson stumps for Republican candidates across the Lone Star State ahead of the midterms. It's the latest sign that GOP leaders hope Musk will spend heavily to help the party keep control of Congress. The people familiar with the planning, who were granted anonymity to discuss private details, cautioned that Musk's schedule is fluid and there could be a last-minute change.

The tech billionaire is reportedly considering spending at least $100 million for the GOP through his super PAC, America PAC, on this year's midterms — but the full scope of where that spending will take place remains unclear. Some Republicans believe Musk is weighing directing some of that money to key House GOP battleground races, according to two of the people.

A spokesperson for America PAC declined to comment. A spokesperson for Johnson didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Any spending by Musk — the richest person in the world — to boost Republicans ahead of November would add to the GOP's already substantial cash advantage over Democrats. President Donald Trump's MAGA Inc. super PAC is sitting on more than $400 million, which its leaders have said will be deployed this fall.

"Battleground Republicans need Elon's support and they will always be happy to take a meeting with him," said one person familiar with the scheduled meeting.

Musk spent roughly $290 million for Trump and Republicans in the 2024 election, mainly through his super PAC, making him the largest individual donor to political committees during the cycle.

He then took a substantial role in Trump's administration overseeing DOGE, before he and the president publicly fell out over Republicans' signature One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The two have since reconciled.

Musk poured roughly $5 million each into both the Congressional Leadership Fund and Senate Leadership Fund late last year, the two major GOP super PACs aimed at keeping control of Congress, along with $5 million into MAGA Inc. He also gave $10 million to a super PAC backing Kentucky Senate candidate Nate Morris in the state's GOP primary and $5 million to V-PAC, a super PAC backing brief DOGE co-leader Vivek Ramaswamy's Ohio gubernatorial bid.
