Sen. Jim Justice Agrees To Pay $5M In Back Taxes After IRS Suit

Sen. Jim Justice and his wife, Cathy, have agreed to pay more than $5 million to settle over 15 years worth of unpaid income taxes after the IRS filed suit Monday.

The West Virginia Republican had unpaid income taxes dating to 2009, according to the lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in West Virginia.

Including penalties and interest, the Justices owe the federal government $5,164,739.75.

“Despite notice and demand for payment of the assessments,” the suit reads, “[Jim] Justice and Cathy L. Justice have neglected or refused to make full payment of those assessments to the United States.”

Hours later, the couple agreed to pay the full amount in a motion for consent judgment in the case.

In October, the IRS filed a lien against the Justices for more than $8 million, documents obtained by Politico at the time show.

Justice was the 36th governor of West Virginia before his 2024 election to the seat formerly held by Sen. Joe Manchin, which he won by campaigning to lower taxes, among other things.

The 74-year-old coal mining heir was at one point West Virginia’s wealthiest resident, but a January Forbes report suggests his net worth is now “less than zero” due to a combination of debts and depreciating assets.
