U.S. Military Pushing For More Access To Greenland: Report

The New York Times on Wednesday reported that the U.S. is negotiating with Denmark to access three additional military bases on Greenland, signaling that the Trump administration's interest in the Arctic island remains strong. This would mark the U.S.'s first military expansion in Greenland in decades, the Times noted.

"I’m working with our department and others to try to develop more ports, more airfields, which leads to more options for our secretary and for the president, should we need them up in the Arctic," Gen. Gregory Guillot, the head of U.S. Northern Command, told Congress last month.

While there is little Denmark, a U.S. NATO ally, can do to block the U.S. military's request, the talks are putting it in an awkward position given President Donald Trump's past push to acquire Greenland, the report said.

Greenlanders also appears to not be on board with the idea of having more U.S. troops sent to the island, per the Times.
