The US supreme court has granted a stay temporarily allowing for Donald Trump’s ban on transgender members of the military to take effect while the case proceeds in lower courts.
The move comes on the heels of the Trump administration asking the supreme court last month to reinstate its ban on transgender troops serving in the armed forces after several judges issued separate rulings against it.
The attempted exclusion of transgender people from the military stemmed from an executive order issue by Donald Trump, which asserted that the sexual identity of such troops harmed military readiness and “conflicts with a soldier’s commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even in one’s personal life”.
The order added: “A man’s assertion that he is a woman, and his requirement that others honor this falsehood, is not consistent with the humility and selflessness required of a service member.”
