Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) thinks President Donald Trump needs to see his doctor.
Citing some of Trump’s profane and threatening public statements over the past week, Raskin asked White House physician Sean Barbabella to conduct a “comprehensive cognitive assessment” of the president and provide a briefing to Congress.

“At a time when our country is at war ― especially when the war was initiated by the President without congressional declaration or consent ― the American people must be able to trust that the Commander-in-Chief has the mental capacity to discharge the essential duties of his office,” Raskin wrote in a letter to Barbabella.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle called Raskin a “a stupid person’s idea of a smart person” in response to his letter.
“President Trump’s sharpness, unmatched energy, and historic accessibility stand in stark contrast to what we saw during the past four years when Democrats like Raskin intentionally covered up Joe Biden’s serious mental and physical decline from the American people,” Ingle told HuffPost.
The questions about Biden were all the more reason for the White House to take stock of Trump’s fitness, Raskin said in his letter. He noted former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) had said that “the president has gone insane” after his Easter Sunday post on Truth Social demanding Iran open the Strait of Hormuz.

“The post combined vulgarity and profanity, unprecedented threats of mass civilian destruction, and a sarcastic invocation of Islam on Easter morning ― a bizarre display that shocked tens of millions of Americans and astonished observers across the political spectrum,” Raskin wrote.
Trump has frequently bragged about his mental acuity and insulted his critics as having low IQs. He’s also boasted of having “aced” cognitive tests without providing details.
An April 2025 memo about Trump’s health by Barbabella said a “comprehensive neurological examination revealed no abnormalities in his mental status, cranial nerves, motor and sensory function, reflexes, gait, and balance.” The letter said Trump fared well on multiple cognitive assessments.
While admitting he’s not a doctor, Raskin claimed Trump’s recent commentary shows decline.

“When the President of the United States threatens to extinguish a civilization on social media, rants about combat missions with children at the Easter Egg Roll, and drops profane tirades on Easter morning, we have indisputably entered the realm of profound medical difficulty and concern,” Raskin wrote.
